Creating a Computer Account and NetID for Students: Step by Step

This document gives quick instructions for creating a computer account. It is intended for students, including students enrolling for the next semester. For other types of accounts, please see the full account creation instructions.

The username you choose during this process will serve as your "NetID". The NetID is used for many processes on campus, including the student computing labs, email, WebCT, the My.Rutgers portal, and transcript requests.

Anti-virus requirement for the residence halls: Rutgers requires all computers running Windows to have anti-virus software. We strongly recommend that you use the Rutgers anti-virus service, based on Trend Micro software. You can get it free of charge once you have finished creating your account. You might want to bookmark the Rutgers AV web page now, so you can come back.

Before you start the step by step procedures, please check the following:

• Do you want to create your account now? If you would like to create your computer account now please go here and select the appropriate campus on which you are registered. Some people prefer to go to one of the student computer labs. If you want to go to one of the labs, we have instructions for finding the OIT computer labs.

• Have you read the Rutgers University Acceptable Use policies? These describe what kinds of things are allowed and not allowed when using computing facilities operated by Rutgers University Computing Services. If you haven't read them yet, please do so now:

If you said yes to both of these questions, then you're ready to use the account creation web page for your system.

NOTE: In the following web forms, please make sure you choose the proper Account Type. This is a menu, which is normally right above the space for your name and SSN.

For students, the proper Account type is normally Student. However, see these exceptions:

New students: New students who will be starting in the next semester will use account type "admit coming" or "new student", depending upon the campus.

Summer students: If you are taking a summer course, but aren't enrolled in Rutgers in any other way, you can create an account for the summer. You will use account type "Summer student".
